What you need to know about safer hair care

“Anyone can be confident with a full head of hair. But a confident bald man -there’s your diamond in the rough.”

Light Fresh Clean

The last few years I have probably tried just about every healthier version of shampoo found on store shelves. To be honest, even with the cleaner shampoos and conditioners, my hair still felt dry, damaged, and stripped. Upon educating myself, I started to realize that hidden among these organic and natural products were sulfates and synthetic fragrances.  As consumers, it is up to us to be more aware of greenwashing in the beauty industry.

Most traditional personal care products contain harmful ingredients like endrocrine disruptors that can have a negative effect on our immune system. Hair products are included among the highly unregulated products on the market that promise health and shine, but comes with a high cost to your health. They are mostly filled with irritants, harmful chemicals, envirionmental disruptors, allergens, and synthetic fragrances.

For example, silicone-based hair products will actually strip your hair of natural nutrients.  The rich shampoo lather people tend to love is typically found in sulfates (SLS, SLES).  Sulfates are known irritants to the scalp, skin, and eyes.  Fragrances are also something to watch out for. Many organic brands still sneak in synthetic fragrances which will raise the toxicity level of any personal care product.

The best natural shampoos and conditioners will contain beneficial plant and herb extracts which nourish instead of strip your hair and scalp. I have been using Beautycounter hair care for a year and my hair is stronger, shinier, and healthier now than before.

Today Beautycounter releases 9 new hair products with a botanical-based formula for clients who have more specific hair concerns and need higher performance. They use something called PureFoam Cleansing Technoglogy which gives the same lather without the all the harsh chemicals.  This means they can offer high performing results while never compromising health and safety.
